A Week in Queensland

Seven sun-soaked days across the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, beaches, beachfront bars, ridiculous food and big nights out. Here's how I'd do it.

A Week in Queensland

Queensland is Australia at its most golden, endless beaches, water so blue it looks edited, and a "no worries" pace that hooks you by day two. A week lets you do the holy trinity: the buzzy Gold Coast, the laid-back Sunshine Coast, and brilliant, underrated Brisbane in between. I spent mine swimming, eating far too well, and chasing sunsets. Here's exactly how I'd spend a perfect week in the Sunshine State.

Start with the beaches

You come to Queensland for the coastline, so start there. The Gold Coast brings the wide, golden, surf-rolling-in kind of beach, while the Sunshine Coast is a touch calmer and leafier. Either way, the move is the same: walk the sand, swim between the flags, and let the salt air reset your brain. Mornings are magic, the light is soft, the crowds are thin, and the water's all yours.

Palm trees, blue sky, endless sand, Queensland doesn't really do bad beach days.

Out on the water

The best way to see this coastline is from the water itself. Whether it's a jet ski blasting across the broadwater, a paddle out on a SUP, or just bobbing about in the shallows, getting out there is non-negotiable. It's equal parts adrenaline and bliss, and the views back towards the beach and high-rises are unbeatable.

Life vests on, sense of dignity off. Worth it every time.

Beachfront bars & long lunches

If there's one thing Queensland has perfected, it's the beachfront long lunch. Find a table with an ocean view, order a cold drink and a slow stream of plates, and let the afternoon dissolve. Watch the surfers, feel the breeze, and don't make any plans for after, the best afternoons here are the ones that quietly turn into evenings.

Sunset drinks with a view, the unofficial Queensland national sport.

The food scene is seriously good

People sleep on Queensland's food, and they shouldn't. Up and down the coast there are restaurants doing genuinely brilliant things, pristine local seafood, share plates built for sunny afternoons, and Mexican spots that ruin you for all others. Come hungry, order the catch of the day, and let someone else pick the wine.

Come hungry, order the catch of the day, and let someone else pick the wine.

Local seafood is the headline act, but the kitchens here can do it all.

Brisbane & that river skyline

Sitting neatly between the two coasts, Brisbane is the easygoing capital that more than earns a day. Wander the riverfront, cross to South Bank for the lagoon and galleries, and time it so you're somewhere with a view when the skyline lights up over the river at dusk. It's warm, walkable and refreshingly unhurried, a city that feels like a holiday in itself.

Golden hour over the river, Brisbane's quietly one of the best-looking cities in the country.

Nightlife & a bit of cabaret

The Gold Coast knows how to put on a night. Start with cocktails somewhere moody and dimly lit, then lean all the way into the fun, and nothing's more gloriously Gold Coast than a night at Dracula's, the city's long-running cabaret institution. It's camp, it's chaotic, it's a rite of passage. Say yes and just go with it.

Good times with good people

In the end, what makes a Queensland week is who you're with. Whether it's a festive catch-up, a big group dinner, or a lazy beach day that runs late, the Sunshine State has a way of turning ordinary plans into the kind of days you talk about for years. Round up your people, leave room in the schedule, and let the good times take over.

The scenery's unreal, but it's the people that make the week.

So, is a week enough?

A week is the sweet spot, long enough to hit all three (Gold Coast buzz, Sunshine Coast calm, Brisbane charm) without ever feeling rushed. You'll come home sandy, sun-kissed and already plotting your next trip back. Build your days around the beach, leave space for one more long lunch, and say yes to the spontaneous stuff.
